Research Interests
MAC and routing protocols, call admission control, service differentiation,
resource sharing, quality of service, traffic modeling, as well as simulation
and performance evaluation of broadband communications networks with recent
emphasis on wireless local-area and sensor networks (WLANs and WSNs).
·
MAC and
routing protocols. Some proposals have been made to specify MAC and routing
protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) that are both QoS-capable and
energy-efficient at the same time.
·
Call
admission control. A new CAC algorithm has been proposed, which is based on
recently published results related to tight delay bounds for GPS-serviced
systems whose input traffic is leaky-bucket constrained.
·
Service
differentiation and resource sharing. We have analyzed the applicability of
different scheduling algorithms in networks with multimedia input traffic so
that the dissimilar needs of each type of traffic are fulfilled.
·
Quality
of service. QoS provision is nothing but the combination of call admission
control mechanisms and service differentiation, both ingredients mentioned
above. The former is necessary to avoid having more active connections than
those that the system can handle, while the latter is essential to be able to
timely give each active connection the resources it needs according to its QoS
requirements.
·
Network
modeling and simulation. Extensive work has been done related to modeling
and simulation of communications networks. We have analyzed the operation of
known systems and the performance of the novel algorithms that arise as
proposals from our research activities. Recent emphasis is on WLANs and WSNs,
but work has been done to simulate wireline systems as well.
·
Traffic
modeling. Research activities in this area have focused on applying
statistical methods to analyze time series and on determining the applicability
of self-similar (fractal) stochastic processes with infinite-variance marginal
distributions to model highly bursty traffic in broadband telecommunications
networks.
