Welcome to our web site

About us:

One of our lab main focuses has been toward the understanding of the cellular processes controlling hyphal morphogenesis in the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa. Particularly, our studies involve the analysis of the enzymes participating in the synthesis of the cell wall, the main structure determining the tubular shape of the hyphae. We are interested in deciphering the secretory route/s followed by the vesicles that contain these cell wall building enzymes and how their traffic and final destination in the cell is regulated.

Moreover, the lab is also interested in the detection and ecological distribution of the human pathogen Coccidioides spp., the causal agent of Valley Fever, in areas of Baja California with semi-arid characteristics. We have used molecular methods to identify the DNA of the fungus in soil samples and we are now working to further characterize the ecological niche of the fungus, to identify the main mammal carriers and to analyze the fungal diversity at the sampled sites.

We are also dabbling in the deep-waters of the Gulf of Mexico, to characterize the fungal diversity in sediments and isolating both fungi and actinomycetes of biotechnological importance. We are interested in characterizing and understanding the fungal community from this extreme environment, and identifying the characteristics that drive the community composition of the site.
